The staff of Integrity Urgent Care knows the public is concerned about Coronavirus and many of the news reports, which can be confusing at best, and misleading in some cases. While any illness has a cause for concern, there are numerous factors in the impact any virus can have on the population.

History

The term coronavirus is an umbrella terms that encompasses several different types of illnesses. Other types of coronavirus “commonly circulate amongst humans and cause mild illness, like the common cold” according to the Center for Disease Control’s website. It is suspected that this version, COVID-19, originated with animals and spread to people, but more research and information will need to be gathered to confirm or deny this hypothesis.

Causes

The virus is spread by coming in contact with someone who has contracted the illness, specifically, through respiratory droplets. It is unlikely that the virus is spread through food or by touching infected surfaces, although there is a risk. By thoroughly washing your hands, avoiding touching your eyes, nose, or face, and cleaning surfaces regularly, you reduce this risk further.

Symptoms

There are a few indications you may have coronavirus or a similar virus and we ask you see a physician as soon as possible if you have any of these symptoms. A dry cough, fever, and shortness of breath can be signs. Symptoms may appear as early as 2 days after exposure or as many as 14 days after coming in contact with someone with the illness.

Prevention Tips

Preventative measures for the coronavirus are like any other viruses we face. Washing your hands regularly with soap and water and drying them completely is a large factor in staying healthy. Additionally, covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing is helpful for preventing spreading any germs to others. Additional tips are to discard used tissues, use an alcohol based sanitizer when hand-washing stations aren’t available, and disinfect frequently touched items.

Treatments

There is no vaccine at this time for the coronavirus. Additionally, treatment involves rest and fluids. The CDC Website offers patients “should receive supportive care to help relieve symptoms.” If you suspect you are sick, please see a doctor right away and avoid moving around in public until you have been seen by a medical professional. By avoiding contact with people in your own home, and even pets, you may be able to keep them healthy as well.

Don’t Panic

There is no need to panic about the coronavirus. By exercising many basic precautions, many of which we consider habits for a healthy lifestyle, your risk is lowered of getting any illness. By gaining information from credible sources and sharing accurate information about the virus, you can help reduce the stigma attached to the illness.
